Garnet Roll Fifth at Long/Short

Vernon Chaplin '07 finished in tenth position to lead a focused group of Swarthmore runners to a fifth-place finish out of 29 teams at the annual Dickinson Long Course/Short Course Invite in Carlisle, Pa. on Saturday morning.

Swarthmore ran the 6K course and finished with 62 total team points. Winner Allegheny (10 points), Carnegie Mellon (27), Elizabethtown (30), and Dickinson (60) placed ahead of the Garnet.

Chaplin, running in his second collegiate race, circled the course in a time of 12:46.17, thirty seconds behind champion Chris Carrier from Allegheny.

Next to finish for the Garnet was sophomore Ross Weller, who finished 26th (13:02.06) as Swarthmore placed seven runners in the top 50 of 204 competitors.

Jon Shoop '08 placed 30th (13:11.78) while seniors Keefe Keeley (13:15.71) and Jim Kreft (13:15.94) rolled in together in 41st and 42nd, respectively. Micah Katz '08 finished 46th (13:20.54) while freshman Dan Hodson finished 49th (13:26.32).

For their next race, the Garnet travel to Baltimore, Md. Swarthmore will compete in the Blue Jay Invite at Oregon Ridge Park on Friday, October 8 beginning at 4:00 p.m.
