Garnet Play Way Into Championship

The Swarthmore volleyball team won a pair of matches on Friday night, defeating DeSales University in five games and then cruising by Frostburg State in three games, earning a spot in the Championship Bracket at the third annual Greyhound Premiere Invitational at Moravian College.

In their opening match the Garnet (2-0) staged a furious rally, down two games to one, winning the decisive fifth game to claim the match by a score of 30-18, 32-34, 27-30, 30-16, 15-10.

Swarthmore turned up the heat in the second match, downing Frostburg 30-11, 32-30, and 30-22.

Its the first time the Garnet have started a season with back-to-back wins since the 2001 season when Swarthmore began the year with a 4-0 record.

The Garnet resume play in the championship bracket tomorrow morning, squaring off with Centennial foe Muhlenberg College at 11:00 a.m. Swarthmore will then turn around and face Alvernia at 1:00 p.m. in their final match of the tournament.

The Swarthmore women makes their 2005 home debut on Wednesday night, entertaining Widener College at 7:00 p.m. in Tarble Pavilion.
