Alvernia’s Run Tops Garnet

Alvernia used a 24-6 second-half run to take a 74-56 non-conference victory over the Garnet in Reading, Pa. The run broke open a 44-44 tie with 14:20 remaining in the game. Trish O'Gurek led the Crusaders (18-5) with 15 points while Radiance Walters '06 paced the Garnet (13-8) with 15 points and six rebounds.

The Garnet jumped out to an early 13-7 lead as Debbie Farrelly '06 scored eight of her 11 points. The Crusaders countered with a 19-2 run to take a 26-15 with 7:40 remaining in the half. The Garnet closed to within five at the 3:15 mark but Alvernia took a 38-30 lead into the break.

Swarthmore scored the first nine points of the second half, on the strength of six Walters points and a Farrelly 3-pointer, to take a 39-38 lead with 17:20 left in the game. From there, the game was tied three more times the final coming on a Karen Berk '08 layup to deadlock the score at 44-44.

O'Gurek led the Crusaders' final charge scoring eight of her points during the run that put the game out of reach.

The Garnet shot a season-best 85% from the charity stripe hitting 17 of 20 attempts led by Walters who finished the game 9 of 10. Berk and Kristen Lee '05 each scored nine points and Jessica Fuhr '07 added six. Alvernia held a 47-27 advantage on the glass.

The Garnet host Franklin & Marshall on Saturday at 2 p.m.
