Eagles Soar Past Garnet
Jessica Shifflett scored 13 points and Tournament MVP Debbie Bruen added 10 as Mary Washington defeated Swarthmore 61-52 to win the annual Swat Tip Off on Saturday night at Tarble Pavilion.
The Eagles used a 12-2 run at the start of the second half to open 32-26 advantage that was never relinquished. Mary Washington benefited from a torrid second half shooting performance (14 for 28) to move to 2-0 on the season.
Radiance Walters '06 earned an All-Tournament selection by scoring a game-high 21 points and corralling 13 rebounds for her second straight double-double. Ali Wolff '05 scored 12 points on 5 for 9 shooting while Laura Popovics contributed 10 points in just eleven minutes of play.
Swarthmore (1-1) travels to central Maryland on Tuesday night to open their Centennial Conference schedule when they square off against 9th-ranked McDaniel College at 7:00 p.m.
