Swat Dips F&M
The Garnet men cruised to a 121-84 victory over defending Centennial Conference Champion Franklin & Marshall by taking nine of the eleven events on Saturday afternoon in Ware Pool.
The quartet of Jeff Schneider '05, Andrew Koczo '07, Reid Johnson '08, and Anders Taylor '07 set the tone by winning the opening event, the 200 medley relay, in a time of 1:42.91.
The next event, the 1000 freestyle, featured two freshmen with loads of potential and impressive splits. Swarthmore's Andrew Frampton and the Diplomats' Derek Nowak went stroke-for-stroke, putting up times that haven't been seen in Ware in nine years. Nowak out-kicked Frampton in the final legs to take victory with a time of 10:01.14, with Frampton touching the wall in 10:02.75. Frampton's time shattered the school record of 10:09.98, set by Mark Friedberg '98 in 1995.
Michael Auerbach '05 (1:48.74) and Jason Horowitz '07 (1:51.56) put the Garnet back in the driver's seat, coming in 1-2 in the 200 freestyle. Koczo followed with a win in the 50 free in a time of 22.78, out-touching the Dips' John Czaplicki (22.81).
Taylor was the next Garnet swimmer to prevail, claiming victory in the 200 IM in 2:05.07, with teammate Rob McKeon '07 taking third place in a time of 2:11.26.
F&M grabbed a host of points by sweeping all three spots in the 100 butterfly, yet Auerbach answered with his second win, taking the 100 free (49.34) with teammate Horowitz nipping at heels in second position (50.28).
Taylor became a double-winner in the next event, winning the 100 backstroke in 57.42, while Frampton got redemption in the 500 free by holding off a hard-charging Nowak with a time of 4:57.63.
Koczo claimed his third victory of the day in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.84), leading a Swarthmore sweep of the event with teammates John Heagy '08 (1:05.90) and Kaena Horowitz '06 (1:06.18).
The Swarthmore men capped off the victory with a thrilling win in the 200 freestyle relay, as Jonathan Augat '07 swam a 21.97 split to run down F&M's Valerie Perfanov, propelling the group of Frampton, Jason Horowitz, and Auerbach to first place in a time of 1:30.61.
The victory pushes Swarthmore's record to 2-1 overall, and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference. The Garnet will travel to New York City on Saturday, November 20th, to face off against NYU at 2:00 p.m.
