New Coordinator for the Beardsley Media Center Arrives

Q: What do Antarctica, Brazil, and the Beardsley Media Center have in common? A: They’re all places that Jeremy Polk has worked. Jeremy Polk joined ITS last week in the role of Media Center Coordinator. Jeremy previously worked as a media producer at the National Science Foundation, where he specialized in documentary filmmaking and media technology support. In 2010-11, he directed and produced three short documentary videos in Antarctica for the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) Ice Core Project, for which he was awarded the Antarctica Service Medal of the United States of America. ITS Welcomes new Media Center Coordinator Tayarisha Poe

Academic Technology is pleased to welcome new Media Center Coordinator and recent Swarthmore College graduate Tayarisha Poe ’12 to the Information Technology Services team. Tayarisha brings a wealth of knowledge about video production, digital photography, printing and the Adobe CS suite along with her lively and welcoming personality to the Media Center.  She has particular interests in multimedia storytelling, digital cinematography and DSLR video production, and we look forward to a series of instructional workshops she’ll be hosting through the academic year on these and other media related topics. Print Release Station Saves Trees, CO2, Real $$

The Print Release Stations, which we’ve tested a bit in McCabe, and have been testing in the Beardsley Media Center continuously since Spring Break, have led to real savings in resources not used…  that is, jobs that people send to the printer, but choose not to actually print (or just forget to pick up). In the past one month (April 5, 2011 to May 5, 2011) we have saved a total of 8,159 pages, of which, 5,847 were color pages and 2,312 were grayscale.  They would have been printed on 5,807 sheets of paper (some people choose duplex).  To put … Continue reading Print Release Station Saves Trees, CO2, Real $$

Do you crave more power?

ITS probably can’t help you with your plans for world domination, but we do have lots of computing power that we can share with you this summer. Virtual Desktops – If you are running projects that can use extra Windows-based systems, we have a pool of “virtual” computers that run on ITS servers and can be accessed from anywhere.  You can run a processor-intensive job on the virtual computer and leave your desktop computer free to perform other operations.  This is also useful if your program needs to run under Windows but you have a Mac or Linux system.  If … Continue reading Do you crave more power?

Beardsley Media Center Adds Pen Tablets for Image Editing

The Beardsley Media Center in has added ten new Bamboo Fun pen based tablets from Wacom to all of the computers in the main room this Fall. These new tablets are ideal for illustration, drawing or photo editing in which the use of a pen would be advantageous. These are medium sized tablets, and they come with a multi-function pen/stylus that lets you navigate contextual menus as well as edit your material. They are pressure sensitive, so artists drawing can vary the width of their “brush” by adjusting how hard they touch the surface with the pen.
