Explore, Make, and Create: Join the ITS Learning Spaces Tour + Open House

Have you ever wondered what you can create in the MakerSpace, how to get started with podcasting, or where to try virtual reality on campus?

On Friday, September 4, from 1:00–4:00 p.m., ITS invites students, faculty, and staff to join us for a Learning Spaces Tour + Open House and discover some of the spaces, tools, and people available to support making, learning, and creating at Swarthmore.

The event has two parts: we’ll start with a guided walking tour of ITS learning spaces across campus, followed by an open house where you can drop in to the spaces that interest you most for hands-on activities, demonstrations, and conversation.

Along the way, you’ll discover resources for photography, video, podcasting, music production, virtual reality, gaming, 3D printing, laser cutting, woodworking, and more.

Start with the Learning Spaces Tour

1:00–2:00 p.m.
Meet at Martin Hall 130 — Creative Media Commons

We’ll begin at the new Creative Media Commons in Martin Hall and make our way through several ITS learning spaces:

  • Martin Hall 130 — Creative Media Commons
  • Martin Hall 133 — Audio Editing Suite + Podcast Studio
  • Martin Hall 135 — Video Editing Suite 1
  • Martin Hall 137 — Video Editing Suite 2
  • Martin Hall 138 — Film Equipment Checkout Room
  • Kohlberg Hall 326 — Language Center
  • Whittier Hall 114 — MakerSpace

At each stop, you’ll get a quick introduction to the space, learn about available tools and resources, and meet ITS staff who can help you get started.

Stay for the Hands-On Open House

2:15–4:00 p.m. | Drop-in Activities + Mingling

After the tour, choose your own path and return to the spaces that interest you most. Activities will happen concurrently, so you can drop in, try something, ask questions, mingle, and move between spaces at your own pace.

Drop-in Activities starting at 2:15 p.m.:

Make & Take: Create a Laser-Cut Coaster

Visit the MakerSpace in Whittier Hall 114 to see the laser cutter in action and learn how a digital design becomes a physical object. Select or customize a simple design and leave with a coaster you helped create.

Take Better Photos with Natural Light

Stop by the Creative Media Commons in Martin Hall 130 to experiment with simple ways to use natural light in your photography. Bring your smartphone or camera, or try one of the DSLR cameras available during the activity.

Intro to Virtual Reality

Head to the Language Center in Kohlberg Hall 326 for a hands-on introduction to Meta Quest 3 headsets. Learn the basics of navigating a virtual environment and explore VR applications at your own pace.

Come Explore

No previous experience is needed. Whether you already have a project in mind or are simply curious about what’s available, the Learning Spaces Tour + Open House is a chance to explore new tools, meet the people who support these spaces, and imagine what you might make or create next.
