Tip: Using Windows media files on a Mac

If you come across a Windows video or audio file that your Mac can’t recognize, don’t despair. Unfortunately, Macs can’t automatically play back files with .wmv or .wma file extensions. The good news is that with a quick installation of some extra components, any Mac running OS X 10.3.9 or later and QuickTime 7 or later can playback Windows video through the QuickTime player. Patches, patches, and more patches!!

Whether you’re a Windows or Mac user, major software vendors have released multiple patches in the past several days to close existing security holes within your system. There are also important security fixes available for popular applications like Adobe Acrobat, Mozilla Firefox and QuickTime. Beginning with Apple, there is a security patch for Mac OS X 10.4 (Security Update 2008-001). This single patch fixes five security vulnerabilities. Security Issue with Apple QuickTime (and iTunes) — Update

UPDATE 12/14/07 A fixed version of Apple QuickTime is now available, 7.3.1, that resolves the RTSP vulnerability described below. The update can be downloaded from: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ The new version supports Mac OS X v10.3.9, Mac OS X v10.4.9 or later, Mac OS X v10.5 or later, Windows Vista, and Windows XP SP2.
