College Mail Server Upgrade 1/17/08

What will change Email service is not expected to be interrupted; however, you might experience delays in receiving new emails between 4:00am and 8:30am on Thursday, Jan 17th. No changes are being made in the way that you send and receive email. Additional spam filtering, to identify email messages which are sent from on campus and considered spam. ITS has installed a program called “SpamAssassin” on the College’s mail server. The Subject line is altered to include:[SPAM?] as a visual cue, and is then sent on to your email inbox for further action. We recommend you delete the message. Technology Training

ITS has recently purchased an on-line service, Atomic Learning, which provides technology training to faculty, staff and students at Swarthmore. Atomic Learning provides an extensive library of short, easy-to-understand tutorials. You can learn how to use the features of a number of software programs including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Just type your question into the search field and Atomic Learning will guide you through the application. ITS Welcomes Gayle Barton, our new CITO

ITS is pleased to welcome, Gayle Barton our new Director of Information Technology Services. On November 16, 2007, Connie Hungerford, Provost made the following announcement to the College Community: I am happy to announce that Gayle R. Barton will become Swarthmore’s new Director of Information Technology Services. Gayle earned a Bachelor of Arts from Bryn Mawr College, majoring in Economics, and then a Master of Education from St. Lawrence University. ITS welcomes Barbara McKinnon

ITS is happy to announce Barbara McKinnon has joined the Client Servcices Team. Barbara comes to us from the University of Pennsylvania, School of Nursing and has recently completed her Microsoft Certification as a Desktop Support Technician and Microsoft Certified Professional. Barbara recently served as the Vice President of Programs for the Delaware Valley Chapter of the Help desk Institute. Barbara has over 10 years of IT experience including support of; desktops, laptops, mobile devices, classrooms and computer labs. Wireless Improvements in McCabe

ITS installed and activated nine new wireless access points in McCabe library over October break. After a survey of McCabe was completed, it was determined that these access points were needed to improve wireless reception around the perimeter of the 2nd and 3rd floor and in the Friends Library and Peace Collection. While wireless doesn’t cover every square inch of McCabe, ITS believes all spaces are covered where a student or staff member would sit down at a desk, table, or chair with their laptop.
