Over two days in July, Dr. Ruben Puentedura, a noted consultant and speaker on educational technology, gave four presentations at a summer mini-conference sponsored by ITS. The topics of the sessions covered areas in which Puentedura sees untapped transformative educational potential: mobile computing, data visualization, gaming, and use of web 2.0 tools in support of communities of practice. Trico to transition from Blackboard to Moodle

As you may be aware, the Tri-Colleges have been conducting a major product review of our Learning Management System (LMS), Blackboard, and a popular alternative, called Moodle. Blackboard is the dominant commercial software company in higher education. Moodle is free, open source software that has been adopted by many institutions of higher education, including most liberal arts colleges. At this point, we are prepared to announce that the three schools decided to undertake a project to convert from Blackboard to Moodle over the next two academic years. Supercomputing Resources At Swarthmore

Swarthmore has received a startup allocation of time on the TeraGrid supercomputing network . We can provide faculty and students time on a variety of machines for education and research purposes (for free!). From TeraGrid’s website: Using high-performance network connections, the TeraGrid integrates high-performance computers, data resources and tools, and high-end experimental facilities around the country. Currently, TeraGrid resources include more than a petaflop of computing capability and more than 30 petabytes of online and archival data storage, with rapid access and retrieval over high-performance networks. Swarthmore ITS is pleased to announce the launch of SwatFiles, a secure web-based file storage system for faculty, staff, and students. Available at swatfiles.swarthmore.edu, SwatFiles allows users to access their files from any computer with an Internet connection and share files with anyone with an e-mail address. ITS welcomes Dan Berlin to the Media Center

Please join ITS in welcoming Daniel Berlin to our staff. Dan is our new media center associate. Dan is tasked with keeping the Beardsley Media Center in good working order and supporting the faculty, staff, and students who are working on video, audio, imaging, and printing projects in the Center. Dan graduated from University of The Arts, College of Media and Communication in Philadelphia with a BFA in Writing for Film and Television.
