Swarthmore College is one of the many colleges that are now offering faculty the opportunity to create their own website through Domain of One’s Own. This means that faculty are able to set up a website domain name, which they can use for a variety of purposes.
Some faculty use their domain to develop a professional online CV, a website for their academic research, academic conferences or events, professional portfolios, academic e-portfolios for their students, and more.
Whatever the purpose, having a domain of one’s own is a great way to have a little bit of control over one’s online presence. It’s also a great way to build a portfolio of work that can be shared with colleagues across the world.
Domain of One’s Own allows faculty to use such apps as WordPress, Omeka, and Scalar to create their own website. These apps can be used for digital class projects. Faculty can also sponsor student projects so their students can create websites too. Student websites are great for e-portfolios and showcasing student work both inside and outside of the classroom.
