Widener Picks Up Win Over Garnet

CHESTER, Pa. -- The Widener Pride defeated the Swarthmore Garnet (6-5) with a final score of 10-2 on Friday afternoon at Edith R. Dixon Field.

It was a promising first inning for Swarthmore (6-5) as infielder Matt Corso ’10 (Paramus, N.J. / Paramus) hit a double to right field bringing in shortstop Thomas Nakamura ’10 (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell) to make the score 1-0 in favor of Swarthmore.  The Garnet defense retired the first three hitters in the bottom of the first.

The Pride (14-2) took the lead in the bottom of the fifth with five runs and five hits to never look back.

Ben Mendelson ’08 (Sabbatus, Maine / Lewiston) pinch-hit in the bottom of the ninth and advanced to second off Andy Eisenlohr’s ’11 (Lower Merion, Pa. / Lower Merion) single through the left field line. Outfielder Scott Dalane ’08 (Vernon, N.J. / Vernon Township) reached first on an error by the left fielder; Mendelson took advantage of the error and crossed the plate.

Garnet freshman pitcher Neil Mejia (2-2) (Oak Park, Ill. / Oak Park River Forest) took the loss while tossing 4.2 innings, he struck out three, giving up seven runs and six hits.

The Garnet  open their Centennial Conference schedule traveling down to Chestertown, Maryland to play Washington College on Tuesday, March 25--first pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
