Garnet Men Shine at Fall ITAs

Fredericksburg, Va. – Freshman Daniel Park defeated teammate and fellow freshman Robert Xie to capture the B3 Singles Championship, sophomore Sam Clark took first in the B5 consolation flight and a trio Garnet reached the semifinals of the Championship Singles consolation bracket, as the Swarthmore men’s tennis team competed at the ITA Southeast Fall Regional from the University of Mary Washington over the weekend.

PHILADELPHIA – Swarthmore College student-athlete Rachel Wallwork ’10 was named the 2010 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Women’s Tennis Performer of the Year for the second consecutive year, while colleagues Wiley Archibald ’10 (baseball), Kevin Friedenberg ’10 (men’s lacrosse), and Stephen Youngblood ’12 (men’s tennis) were also selected as Academic All-Stars for their respective sports, the paper announced on Tuesday.

Garnet Men Fight Hard, But Fall to Johns Hopkins 6-0 in Centennial Title Match

BALTIMORE – Johns Hopkins captured its fourth consecutive Centennial Conference championship, besting the Swarthmore College men’s tennis team 6-0 on Sunday afternoon from Baltimore.

The victory in the title match is the Blue Jays’ second in as many years over Swat – but it didn’t come easy, as the Garnet fought hard, losing close decisions at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles before eventually succumbing in singles play.

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – A sweep of doubles play and singles wins from sophomore Zak Kelm at No. 2 and freshman James Wieler at No. 6 was enough to send the Swarthmore College men’s tennis team to the Centennial Conference Championship match for the second-straight season, as Swat defeated Franklin & Marshall 5-0 in the Centennial semifinals on Saturday afternoon from the Faulkner Courts.

Youngblood, Kelm Named All-Centennial

LANCASTER, Pa. – Sophomore Stephen Youngblood and sophomore Zak Kelm of the Swarthmore College men’s tennis team have both been named to the Centennial Conference All-Conference team, the Conference announced on Friday afternoon

Youngblood is a first-team selection while Kelm makes the second team. Youngblood and Kelm also combined to earn second-team honors in doubles.

Swat Closes Out Regular Season With 7-2 Win Over F&M

LANCASTER, Pa. – Sophomore Zak Kelm, sophomore Max Bressman and junior Mark Wee all finished with victories in singles and doubles play as the Swarthmore College men’s tennis team (9-9, 8-1) closed out the regular season with a hard-fought 7-2 victory over Franklin & Marshall on Saturday afternoon from Lancaster.

Garnet Tennis Rallies to Defeat Haverford 6-3, Clinch Spot in Centennial Playoffs

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Visiting Haverford took a 2-1 lead following doubles play, but the Swarthmore College men’s tennis team stormed back, sweeping singles 2-through-6 to overtake the Fords 6-3 from the Faulkner Courts on Tuesday evening.

The victory clinches the Garnet (8-9, 7-1) a spot in the upcoming Centennial Conference tournament.
