Mustangs Cruise Past Garnet

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Villa Julie Mustangs picked up a 14-6 win over the Swarthmore Garnet in women's lacrosse action on a windy Thursday night. Swarthmore fell to an overall record of 4-3 while Villa Julie improved to 5-2.

Although Garnet freshman Emily Evans (Atlanta, Ga. / North Springs) put Swarthmore on the board first, the Mustangs scored back-to-back goals to take the lead. Also scoring in the first half for the Garnet was Marissa Schaffer ’08 (Moreland Hill, Ohio / Laurel School), who was assisted by Anna de Regt ’09 (Redmond, Wash. / Overlake School) at 23:46 to even the score at 2-2. Following the Swarthmore goal the Mustangs went on an 11 goal run to take the lead to close the first half at 13-2.

The Swarthmore defense went into the second half with a new found determination, only allowing one goal for the Mustangs. The Garnet defense picked up 11 of their 19 ground balls in the second half. Swarthmore goalie Susannah Blair ’08 (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton Day) led the team with a season-high five caused turnovers while picking up five ground balls. Garnet defender Melissa Grigsby ’09 (West Chester, Pa. / West Chester East) had a game-high six ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Even though Swarthmore out scored Villa Julie in the second half with four goals to their one, it was not enough for a come back. Garnet freshman Amy Vachal (Somerset, N.J. / Rutgers Prep) scored her 21st goal of the season off a pass from senior defender Megan Sanborn (Lewiston, N.Y. / Nichols School) with 27:46 on the clock. Swarthmore Abbe Muller ’10 (West Hartford, Conn. / Conrad), Schaffer and Sanborn all took advantage of free positions to put one past the Mustang goalie.

Between the posts for the Garnet, Blair picked up nine saves. Senior Kaitlin Brzozowki (Bel Air, Md. / Fallston) was in the net for the Mustangs and collected a total of seven saves.

The Garnet will open their Centennial Conference schedule on Saturday, March 22 when they travel to Gettysburg College; game time is set for a 1:00 pm.
