Swarthmore Falls in Chester

CHESTER, Pa. - The Swarthmore volleyball team went 0-2 at their dual match on Saturday when they played Widener and Fairleigh Dickinson.

The Widener Pride (13-15) defeated the Garnet 3-1 in their first match of the day by scores of 27-30, 14-30, 30-14, 17-30. Garnet junior Jen Wang (Palo Alto, Calif./ Henry Gunn) had 17 kills and 12 digs while Karen Berk '08 (Havertown, Pa./ Haverford) posted eight kills and four blocks. Junior libero Erin Heaney (Buffalo, N.Y./ City Honors) led the defense with 24 digs and served three aces. With an impressive match setter Kearney Bangs '10 (Kingston, Wash./ North Kitsap) had 38 assists, 13 digs and four kills.

In their second match of the morning Swarthmore (9-16, 4-4 CC) fell to the Fairleigh Dickinson (Florham) Devils (25-9) by scores of 19-30, 25-30, 23-30. The Garnet got strong performances from Wang with 11 kills, 10 digs and three blocks while Vanessa Wells '08 (Chicago, Illi./ Lincoln Park) produced 11 kills and six blocks. Also contributing a strong effort was Bangs who had 35 assists and nine digs.

Swarthmore volleyball travels to Haverford Wednesday Oct. 24 for a Centennial Conference match starting at 7:00.
