Berk, Garnet Trap Bears

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -Swarthmore seniors Karen Berk (Havertown, Pa. / Haverford) and Vanessa Wells (Chicago, Ill. / Lincoln Park) combined for 29 kills and six blocks to lead the Garnet to a 3-0 win over Ursinus Thursday night. The Garnet (9-14 overall, 4-4 CC) claimed victory by scores of 30-13, 30-22 and 30-19 in front of a rambunctious Tarble Pavilion crowd.

The Swarthmore women held pre-game festivities, honoring the three senior members: middle hitters Katherine Gold (Cherry Hill, N.J. / Cherry Hill East), Berk and Wells.  The three women were an integral part of the 2005 Garnet squad that made the program's first-ever Centennial Conference playoff appearance.

Swarthmore junior captain Erin Heaney (Buffalo, N.Y. / City Honors) continued to direct the defense, accumulating 18 digs while classmate Jen Wang (Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry Gunn) added 11 digs and eight kills.

Garnet setter Kearney Bangs '10 (Kingston, Wash. / North Kitsap) handed out 37 assists while also posting eight digs.

Ursinus outside hitter Jill Asplach led the Bears (5-14 overall, 1-7 CC) with 15 kills while setter Jen Fargo contributed 16 assists and 10 digs.

Swarthmore travels to Widener this coming Saturday, Oct. 20 for a non-conference tri-match with the Pioneers (10:00 a.m.) and Farleigh Dickinson (12:00 p.m.).
