Teide Boysen’s comments about tearing apart HiSeq 2000’s and ABI Solids sent me to Ebay to see if I could find pictures of what is in the ABI machines.
It looks like there is an Olympus IX81 microscope without a stage, condensers, or an objective head and an IX2-UCB controller. These are bundled with a Spot Insight 4 firewire camera. The camera itself is probably worth more than these listings have been selling for (~$3750). Teide also reports that the Solid sequencers also include “a complete IAI Tabletop Robot, ready for use”.

This is a great combo of camera and an olympus IX81 microscope with an IX2-UCB controller, I think nothing could be better than this combo to get clear images. I am looking forward to purchase it.

We have taken the base IX81 and IX2-UCB from the ABI SOLID4. We cobbled together a nearly complete IX81 (transmitted light pillar/condenser, halogen and mercury lamps, objectives, etc.) by purchasing the rest of the parts 2nd hand from Taobao (this is a Chinese website similar to eBay). We added a Thorlabs MLS stage we had laying around, to try to make a fully automated microscope for pathology. However, we were having trouble getting the UCB to work with uManager. I realize this is not a standard UCB, its OEM version, and we think it has to do with the DIP switches inside. Has anyone succeeded in getting this UCB to work with uManager?
Shawn, did you ever get micromanager going with the old SOLiD/Olympus scope?
