Prompts for Week 5

February 20th, 2008 by Bob

To get the ball rolling for our discussion tomorrow, I’ve created this post for you to talk about the TV series and episodes you watched this week. What show did you choose? What drew you to it? Which episodes did you watch, and how did you like them? What connections can you draw between the activities of “fan critics” described in Jenkins and your own take on the texts?

I chose to go with Twin Peaks. I ended up watching most of season one. I can see people getting hooked on the show, and I found myself participating in what Jenkins described as the predominantly male fan practice of appealing to what I know of David Lynch as a creator. Unfortunately it was not all that useful as despite my attempts to figure out the show, it became progressively more bizarre. The mystery and the humor kept me engaged more than the relationships, which I only paid attention to discern the narrative. I wonder if my practice would have been the same if I had not read Jenkins, or if I am simply more aware of it now, and why I didn’t actively try to subvert Jenkins’ more gendered observations by becoming engrossed in the interpersonal relationships. Also Kyle MacLachlan’s embroidered FBI jacket is magical, and the knowledge that the character must have had it custom made (because the FBI has never issued such a jacket) is so fitting to his character.
