Swat Softball Swings to First Win

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Swarthmore senior Christine Sendelsky had two doubles and drove in four runs as the Garnet softball team picked up its first victory of 2009, defeating Peace 9-7 in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday.

Swarthmore (1-3) fell by a score of 4-3 in the first game against the Pacers (5-7) despite a 2-for-3 effort by Sendelsky (Edison, N.J. / John Stevens) and seven strikeouts by pitcher Alexandra Zelaski '09 (Middleburg Heights, Ohio / Midpark).

The Garnet bats broke open a 1-1 game in the fourth inning, stringing four hits together with one out.  Sendelsky smoked a two-run double to center, plating Lauren Walker '09 (Fallston, Md. / The Hotchkiss School [CT]) and Kathryn Riley '10 (Dagsboro, Del. / Indian River).  After another out, Swarthmore freshman Elizabeth Cushing (Middletown, Del. / Padua Academy) drove in Sendelsky with an infield single and then came around to score on a Pacer miscue.

Swarthmore struck for three more runs in the fifth, with another two-run double off the bat of Sendelsky doing damage to the tune of a 9-5 lead.

Riley and Walker both picked up three hits in the victory while outfielder Kristin Caspar (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y. / Briarcliff) added two hits and scored twice.  Riley (1-1) also picked up her first win of the season in the circle after fanning five hitters.

The Garnet conclude the North Carolina leg of their spring break on Wednesday, March 11 with a twinbill at Methodist.  First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
