Swat Volleyball Topped by Fords

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Garnet outside hitter Genny Pezzola posted a match-high 12 kills, along with 13 digs, as the Swarthmore volleyball team dropped a hard-fought 3-0 decision to Haverford on Wednesday night in Tarble Pavilion.

The final home game of 2008 saw the visiting Fords (21-6, 8-1 CC) earn the clean sweep with set scores of 25-22, 25-16, and 25-20.  The Garnet dip to 6-18 overall, and 2-7 in the Centennial.

Swarthmore posted a strong defensive effort against the top offensive team in the Conference—Haverford leads all teams with 1,254 kills.  Long rallies ensued all night with five of the Garnet women posted double-digit dig totals at match’s end.

Pezzola (Oakland, Calif. / St. Mary’s College HS) played arguably the best match of her young collegiate career, committing just one hitting error in 45 attempts (.244 attack percentage) on the way to her 17th double-double of the season.  She leads Swarthmore with 4.16 digs per set, ranking in the top-five for the Centennial.

Garnet senior outside hitter Jen Wang (Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry Gunn) had a team-high 16 digs while posting eight kills to move with four of setting the school record, currently held by Erica George ’07 (1,151).

Swarthmore volleyball concludes the 2008 season this Saturday, November 1 with an 11:00 a.m. match at Franklin & Marshall.
