Garnet Fall to Cavaliers

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Swarthmore Garnet fell to the visiting Cabrini Cavaliers, 3-2, in field hockey action Thursday night at Clothier Field.
Cabrini (5-3) was the first to get on the board when junior Melissa Benedetti’s (Collingswood, N.J. / Collingswood) shot rebounded to sophomore Shannon Mulhern (Quakertown, Pa. / Quakertown).

Sixteen minutes into the game junior Joslyn Young (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Community) knotted the score to one goal a piece off a penalty stroke.

Swarthmore (1-5) took the lead at 28:38 in the first half when Ashley Gunter '09 (Crisfield, Md. / Worchester Prep) sent a past to junior forward Abbe Muller (West Hartford, Conn. / Conard).

Second half action took a turn for the Garnet as Cabrini collected two additional goals from Benedetti. The first flew into the net following a tip-off from freshman Maura Gordon (Lititz, Pa. / Lancaster Catholic). The game winner was knocked off Benedetti’s stick when a penalty corner was sent into the arch.

Swarthmore junior Gina Grubb (Pittsburg, Pa. / Oakland Catholic) started in the net for the Garnet and collected 11 saves. Sophomore Katie Ashmore (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton) picked-up two saves while in the cage for Swarthmore.

The Garnet will take on neighboring rival Bryn Mawr on Saturday, September 20th. The game is schedule for 12:00 p.m.
