Swarthmore Gears Up For Centennial Playoffs

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. -- The Swarthmore softball team makes its third consecutive appearance in the Centennial Conference Championships this weekend, hosted by Ursinus College on May 3-4.

The 2008 Centennial Championships will be kicked off Saturday, May 3 when the No.2-seed Haverford squares off with No. 3 Dickinson at 10:00 a.m. on the Eleanor Frost Snell Softball Field in Collegeville, Pa. The Garnet (21-16 overall, 10-6 CC) earned the No. 4 seed and take on top-seeded Ursinus (28-9, 13-3 CC) in the latter first-round contest, set to being at 12:00 p.m. (or 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.

The 2008 Swarthmore team relied on small-ball principles to reach the Conference playoffs, maximizing pitching, defense and speed. In 16 Conference games, the Garnet ranked second in fielding percentage (.963) and stolen bases (14), while listing third in earned run average (1.58) and strikeouts (88).
