Dalane Goes 6-for-6 in Garnet Win

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Swarthmore baseball team (7-6, 1-1 CC) downed visiting Washington College (5-6, 1-1 CC) in a 15-3 Centennial Conference win for the Garnet late Friday afternoon at Clothier Fields.

After Swarthmore took a small lead with one run in the first inning they stepped up their game and off at the top of the second. The bases were filled for outfielder Scott Dalane ’08 (Vernon, N.J. / Vernon Township) after two consecutive bunts from short stop Thomas Nakamura ’10 (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell) and second baseman Kevin Kooi ’09 (Lafayette, Calif. / College Preparatory School). Dalane hit a line drive up the middle earning two RBIs to send catcher Wiley Archibald ’10 (Berkeley, Calif. / The College Preparatory School) and Nakamura home to make the score 3-1 for the Garnet. The Shoreman pitcher tried to pick-off Ben Scheinderman ’11 (Easton, Pa. / Easton), who was the first of two to take a base on the Garnet double stolen base play, after the failed pick-off went sour Dalane stole home to make the score 6-1. Third baseman Conor Casey ’09 (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell) hit an off-the-wall double to have Scheiderman cross the plate. After the garnet batted around first basemen Matt Corso ’10 (Paramus, N.J. / Paramus) hit a line drive single to left field for a base hit and Nakamura hit into a double play to end the inning.

The Garnet collected their final two runs in the sixth and eighth innings respectively. The first came from Scheinderman who singled up the middle to have Dalane score. Garnet infielder James Beall ’11 (New York, N.Y. / The Collegiate School) picked up his first RBI of the game to advanced Dalane home for his fourth run of the game.

The Shoremen picked up one run in each of the final three innings while collecting a total of eight hits for the game.

Dalane had an impressive day at the plate going 6-for-6 and while picking up three RBIs.

Garnet pitcher Neil Mejia ’11 (Oak Park, Ill. - Oak Park River Forest) commanded the zone for six innings with six strike-outs and allowing no runs and only four hits. Mejia picked up his third win, while earning his first career Conference win.

The Garnet will travel to Baltimore, Maryland on Saturday, March 29 for a double-header against Centennial foe Johns Hopkins, first pitch is scheduled for 12:30 pm.
