Garnet Men Pull Ahead of Dickinson


CARLISLE, Pa. -- The Swarthmore men's swim team picked up their fourth Centennial Conference win, defeating Dickinson with a final score of 118-87. Despite Garnet All-America Anne Miller's three wins, the Dickinson Red Devils women's swim team (6-4, 4-3 CC) earned a 112-93 conference win over Swarthmore (6-4, 4-1 CC) on Saturday afternoon.

The Garnet picked up their first win of the afternoon in the women’s 400 medley relay with Allie Jordan ’09 (Niskayuna, N.Y. / Niskayuna), Stephanie Su ’11 (Parsippany, N.J. / Parsippany Hills), Jennie Lewis ’08 (Darien, Conn. / Darien) and Chelsea Brett ’11 (Mechanicsburg, Pa. / Trinity) touching the wall first at 4:13.83.

Miller (Buffalo, N.Y. / Buffalo Seminary) picked up her first win in the 1,000 freestyle with a 10:52.99 race-time.

On the men’s side, Swarthmore took the top two positions in the 1,000-free; Stephen Shymon ’09 (San Diego, Calif. / Univ. of San Diego) earned his first win of the meet with a 10:22.17 race-time and coming in second at 10:43.16 was Garnet freshman Derrick Kao (Santa Monica, Calif. / Harvard-Westlake).

Finishing one-two in the 200 freestyle were Swarthmore’s Andrew Frampton ’08 (Silver Spring, Md. / Gonzaga College HS) and Michael Ahn ’10 (Cupertino, Calif. / Monta Vista) with times of 1:50.21 and 1:50.92, respectively. Frampton collected his second win in the 200 butterfly, touching the wall at 2:07.30.

Collecting two wins for the Garnet was freshman standout Sterling Satterfield (Durham, N.C. / Charles E. Jordan). The freshman powered to wins in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:09.46 and the 200 breaststroke (2:17.64).

Swarthmore took the top three positions in the 200 butterfly; Miller set the pace with a time of 2:17.20 and was followed by freshman classmates Allison Bishop (Macungie, Pa. / Emmaus) and Fatima DeVol (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia / American International School) with times of 2:24.45 and 2:38.13, respectively. For her third win of the meet, Miller swam the 500 freestyle in 5:23.44.

Freshman Santiago Lombo (Houston, Texas / Strake Jesuit) swam the 200 backstroke in 2:05.28, picking up the win for the Garnet.

The men also took the top three positions in the 500 freestyle: Shymon came in first at 5:07.55, Frampton at 5:10.69 and Kao at 5:15.51.

The swim teams will gear up for their final regular season meet, travelling to Chestertown, Maryland to take on Washington College on Wed., Feb. 13 with a 6:30 p.m.meet time.
