Dickinson Collects Conference Win Over Garnet

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Dickinson women's basketball team improved to 14-6, 12-2 in the Centennial on Saturday afternoon, defeating Swarthmore 70-55 in Tarble Pavilion Saturday afternoon. Both teams were sporting pink shirts during the pre-game shoot-around and wore pink shoe laces in honor of the WCBA's "Think Pink" week.

Pink ShoelacesSwarthmore’s Kathryn Stockbower ’11 (Ft. Washington, Pa. / Upper Dublin) registered her Centennial-leading 17th double-double, posting team-highs in points (18) and rebounds (11). Garnet senior Karen Berk (Havertown, Pa. / Haverford) scored 11 points and was one rebound shy of a double-double.

Dickinson senior Laura Houseal (Harleysville, Pa. / Souderton) also had a game-high 18 points, shooting 8-for-14 from the field.

Dickinson started the game with an 11-3 run; junior Laura Lyons (Hatfield, Pa. / Pennridge) contributed nine of those points.

Swarthmore came within one following a three-pointer from senior Laura Popovics (Gorham, Maine / Gorham) at 9:26. Dickinson’s full-court press stalled Swarthmore’s scoring efforts, but with 7:40 remaining on the clock the Garnet took their first lead, with a 9-0 run.

Closing the first half Dickinson led by six, with 36-30 showing on the scoreboard. Swarthmore’s bench out scored Dickinson’s 12-7, while the Red Devils had 14 points in the paint compared to 10 for the Garnet.

A Swarthmore lay-up from Stockbower knotted up the game at 17:45, making the score 36-36. Dickinson answered with an 18-4 run to push their lead to 13 points at 8:47.

The Red Devils held their largest lead of the game, 67-50, at 2:55.

Swarthmore freshman Sarah Brajtbord (Dallas, Texas / Greenhill School) scored a career-high six points, shooting 3-4 from the field while Garnet guard Melissa Grigsby ’09 (West Chester, Pa. / West Chester East) dished out a career-high seven assists.

The Garnet defense held Dickinson freshman Carole Dempsey (Potomac, Md. / Chruchill) to four points--the forward normally averages 10.3 points per game. Three of the Red Devils’ starters scored in the double digits: Houseal had 18, sophomore Brook Muller (Northampton, Pa. / Whitehall) scored 14 points and Lyons add 13 total points.

The Garnet will continue their Centennial Conference schedule when they host Muhlenberg on Tuesday, February 12—tip off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
