First Annual Holiday Food Drive

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Swarthmore College Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) sponsored its First Annual Holiday Food Drive. The food donations collected during the drive were donated to the Bernardine Center in Chester, a local organization that assists low-income Chester residents.

The drive started on November 26 and lasted through December 14, during this time SAAC targeted members of the Swarthmore Athletic Community as well as Swarthmore students and staff. The Holiday Food Drive was a huge success, as over 750 non-perishable food items were collected during the three-week span.

SAAC would like to thank everyone who contributed to the drive, but particularly its biggest contributors: the Swarthmore softball and women’s soccer teams, and the Phi Psi Fraternity. Each group donated over 150 food items to the drive.

The Bernardine Center distributes emergency or supplemental food and supplies to the local area. During the 2006 holiday season the center provided Holiday Dinners for 209 Chester households, which included 285 children, 240 adults, and 70 senior citizens. This year, thanks to the generous contributions of the Swarthmore Athletics Community, they hope to reach out to even more families.
