Red Devils Cruise Past Garnet

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Garnet volleyball team got double-digit kills three different players yet fell to visiting Dickinson 3-0 Wednesday evening in the Centennial opener for both squads. The Red Devils won by game scores of 30-26, 30-26 and 30-22.

Swarthmore falls to 3-9 overall, 0-1 in the Conference while the Red Devils improve to 3-8 overall and 1-0 in the Centennial.

Dickinson outside hitter Elista Gosheva (Sofia, Bulgaria / American Unv. of Sofia) posted a match-high 14 kills to along with seven digs while teammate Amanda Lehn (Venetia, Pa. / Peters Township) passed out 32 assists. Dickinson libero Amanda Hayes (Midlothian, Va. / Midlothian) paced the defense with 12 digs.

The Garnet got a team-high 11 kills from senior middle hitter Katherine Gold (Cherry Hill, N.J. / Cherry Hill East) while Jen Wang '09 (Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry Gunn) and Vanessa Wells '08 (Lincoln, Ill. / Lincoln Park). Sophomore Johanna Bond (Pittsford, N.Y. / Pittsford-Sutherland) had a team-high 13 digs while junior libero Erin Heaney (Buffalo, N.Y. / City Honors) added 11 digs.  Kearney Bangs '10 (Kingston, Wash. / North Kitsap) continued her strong play at setter, handing out 34 assists with eight digs on the night.

Swarthmore travels to central Pennsylvania this weekend for the Blue Jay Classic hosted by Elizabethtown College. The first Garnet match will be on Friday, Sept. 21 against the host Blue Jays at 2:30 p.m.
