Stevens Tech Wins Fifth Annual Garnet Classic
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Stevens Institute of Technology overtook Frostburg State to win the championship at the fifth annual Garnet Classic volleyball tournament, hosted by Swarthmore College this past weekend. The Ducks (10-1), led by tournament Most Valuable Player Melanie Volk (Thompson Station, Tenn./ Father Ryan), beat the Bobcats 3-0 (30-24, 30-24, 30-19).
Volk, a junior outside hitter, earned her MVP title after posting 40 kills and 31 digs during the two-day tournament. Fellow Duck, junior setter Melissa Rhode (New Orleans, La./ Benjamin Franklin), was selected to the all-tournament team after registering 56 assists, 40 digs, 26 kills, eight blocks and four aces. Stevens Tech went 4-0 for the weekend, also collecting wins over Cabrini, Salisbury and Swarthmore.
Garnet Classic runner-up Frostburg State (7-6) was led by freshman outside hitter Brooke Winterling (Glenelg, Md./ Glenelg), who was named All-Tournament after acquiring 58 kills and three blocks. Earning a 3-1 record for the weekend, the Bobcats defeated Rutgers-Newark, Salisbury and Swarthmore on their way to the championship game.
Swarthmore senior captain Katherine Gold was selected to the all-tournament after posting 10 digs and nine kills against Stevens Tech. Karen Berk '08 and Vanessa Wells '08 posted four blocks each against the Ducks. Swarthmore dropped a tough five-game loss to Cabrini in their final match. Garnet setter Kearney Bangs '10 aided her team with 65 assists and four aces. Swarthmore outside hitter Jen Wang '09 had 25 kills while sophomore outside hitter Johanna Bangs posted 16 of her own.
