Trio of Garnet Goals for a Win

SWARTHMORE, Pa.- The Swarthmore field hockey team (4-1) beat visiting Randolph-Macon (2-4) on a sunny Sunday fall afternoon at Clothier Field by the score of 3-1.

Natalie Stone '09 (Philadelphia, Pa./ Friends Select) scored the first Garnet goal of the afternoon off a cross from senior defender Rachel Turner (Summit, N.J./ Summit High). It was Stone's team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Swarthmore senior forward Abbie Fischer (Sudbury, Mass./ Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) scored the second Garnet goal at the 16:55 mark, taking a long cross from midfielder Devon Novotnak '11 (Fogelsville, Pa./ Northwestern Lehigh).

The second half started with the Garnet leading 2-0 and 15 minutes in freshman forward Sara McCabe (Millsboro, Del. / Sussex Central) drilled in a broken penalty corner.

The Yellow Jackets got on the board late in the second half-forward Lindsay Walker '10 (Berlin, Md./ Stephen Decatur) squeezed a shot past Garnet netminder Gina Grubb '10 (Pittsburg, Pa./ Oakland Catholic) at 63:02. The goal was assisted from forward Jill Dixon (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) who gave a short pass off to Walker in front of the goal.

Anna Baeth '09 (Frederick, Mary. / Central) led the Garnet defense with a number of clears during the Yellow Jacket penalty corners. Playing for 59:10, Swarthmore freshman goalie Katie Ashmore (Princeton, N.J./ Princeton) had three saves. Relieving Ashmore in the second half, Grubb posted two of her own saves.

Sophomore Ashley Crouch (Chester, Va. / Thomas Dale) posted 10 saves in goal for Randolph-Macon.

The Garnet hockey will continue against Elizabethtown at Clothier Field on September 20th at 7:00pm.
