Academic Computing has recently updated most of the software and equipment in the Faculty Resource Room. Last year we introduced new Mac Pro workstations for video editing with 30 inch Cinema Displays, dual DVD writing drives and Final Cut Pro Suite, all connected to almost 7 Terabytes of storage via high speed Fibre-channel connections (faster than attached hard drives).
This year, we’ve upgraded the video editing software to Final Cut Pro Suite 2, and we’ve upgraded the rest of the equipment in the room. We now have a new 24inch Intel iMac attached to the slide and large (12″x18″) flatbed scanners at the faculty Mac scanning station, and we’ve added a new 12″x18″ flatbed scanner with a Transparency Adapter to the Windows workstation. We’ve also introduced Adobe Creative Suite Premier CS3 to the two scanning stations, which incorporates the latest versions of Adobe Photoshop, Acrobat, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, and Flash. For those needing OCR (Optical Character Recognition) capabilities, the new scanner attached to the Dell (Windows) workstation provides OCR through ABBYY Fine Reader, Adobe Acrobat or Microsoft Office. The new iMac will also have an up-to-date versions of Apple’s iWork ’08 suite, which includes Keynote, Pages, and Numbers, and iLife ’08, which includes iMovie, iWeb, iPhoto, iDVD and GarageBand.
