Junior Philippe Celestin, Swarthmore Soccer Featured in Philadelphia Inquirer

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Junior Philippe Celestin and No. 7 Swarthmore College men’s soccer team were the subject of a feature story in Thursday’s Philadelphia Inquirer. The story focuses on the balancing act that Celestin – who scored the Garnet’s game-winning goal on Sunday and performed a stomp music piece at the College’s Rhythm and Motion performance the previous day – and many Swarthmore students face on a dialy basis, as well as the recent success of the men’s soccer team.

Swarthmore Athletes named to the All-Centennial Conference Sportsmanship Team

LANCASTER, Pa. – Six Swarthmore student-athletes were named to the fall All-Centennial Conference Sportsmanship Team today. The Centennial’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee created the team to emphasize sportsmanship within the Conference. All institutions elected one member from their team who displays good sportsmanship throughout the season to be a member of the All-Centennial team.

Then in the second overtime, Philippe Celestin sprints down the field untouched, jukes two defenders and blasts the game-winning goal past Hobart keeper in the 107th minute to advance the Garnet to the NCAA Sweet 16. SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Swarthmore junior Philippe Celestin scored the game-winning goal – his first goal of the season – in the 107th minute of play to give the Garnet a 2-1 (2OT) victory over Hobart in an exhilarating second round NCAA Division III men’s soccer game from Clothier Field Stadium on the campus of Swarthmore College on Sunday evening.

With the victory, the Garnet (16-2-2) advance to the Sweet 16 for the second consecutive season to face Transylvania next weekend at a site to be determined.

Garnet Advance to NCAA Second Round with 2-1 Victory Over U.S. Merchant Marine Academy

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – An own goal off the head of a U.S. Merchant Marine Academy defender with just 04.6 seconds remaining in the first half was the difference as the Swarthmore College Garnet (15-2-2) rallied from an early 1-0 deficit to defeat the Mariners 2-1 in the first round of the NCAA Division III men’s soccer championships Saturday evening from Clothier Field Stadium.

Junior Gage Newman scored the equalizer in the 30th minute for the Garnet, who fell behind 1-0 in the first five minutes of play thanks to a USMMA (15-4) goal by Rusty Denton in the fifth minute of play. But Newman’s goal and the crucial own goal as seconds ticked away in the first half were enough to advance the Garnet to the second round of the NCAA Division III men’s soccer championships tomorrow against Hobart (6:00 p.m.) from Clothier Field Stadium.

Garnet Soccer Receives At-Large Bid to NCAA Tournament; Will Host First and Second Round Matches

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The No. 7/10 Swarthmore men’s soccer team has received an at-large bid to the 2009 NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship and will host first and second round matches on November 14-15 at Clothier field.

The first match will feature Hobart (14-3-2) – the champion of the Liberty League – vs. St. Joseph’s (13-8) – the champion of the Skyline Conference – at 5:00 p.m on Saturday, November 14. The second match will feature the host Garnet (14-2-2) against the Merchant Marine Academy (15-3), an at-large bid recipient from the Landmark Conference, at 7:30 p.m.
