No. 2 Garnet Men Cruise Past Moravian 4-0

BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - One game after being held without a point for just the second time this season,  it didn't take senior forward  Morgan Langley too long to get back on track.

Langley scored his team-leading eighth goal of the year just  five minutes into the game  while adding two assists to his NCAA-leading total as the No. 2 Swarthmore College men’s soccer team (11-0-1) dominated the Moravian Greyhounds, 4-0, on Tuesday night from Clothier Field in a non-conference battle.

Langley added a goal and two assists to lead the Garnet offense.

The powerful Garnet offense - ranked 23rd in the nation in goals per game (2.32) - wasted no time in opening up the scoring.  Langley, who also finds himself ranked among the NCAA elite in assists (1) per game, maneuvered past the Moravian goalkeeper to score an unassisted goal on an open net in the fifth minute, staking the Swarthmore men to an early 1-0 lead.

Moravian quickly fought back almost tied it up just minutes later, but Greyhound midfielder Jeffrey Algor’s hard shot from the top of the box was denied, thanks to a full-body leaping save by junior Garnet goalkeeper junior David D’Annunzio.

Following D'Annunzio's highlight-reel save, the Swat offense continued its assault of the Greyhound defense, doubling the lead to 2-0 in the 15th minute on a Langley-assisted goal by junior midfielder Roberto Contreras.

The score would remain 2-0 for almost sixty minutes - despite the best efforts of an explosive Garnet offense that fired 13 shots in the interim.  The beginning of the second half was dominated by rough play, as twelve fouls were called and two yellow card given out in the first thirty minutes of the half.  With an increasingly animated crowd behind it, Swarthmore finally broke through once again in the 75th minute as junior forward Fabian Castro outran two Greyhound defenders and the goalkeeper to net his sixth goal of the season.

With less than three minutes to play, freshman midfielder Jack Momeyer scored his third goal of the year to bring the game to the final score to 4-0. Momeyer has now scored in back-to-back games and has three goal on three shots for the season.

D'Annunzio was outstanding in 80-plus minutes in net for the Garnet, making five saves. Sophomore Jake Tracy finished off the game for the Garnet.

With the victory, the Garnet remains a perfect 8-0 at Clothier Field Stadium for the 2010 season and extends its regular-season unbeaten streak to 21 games.

Swarthmore hopes to maintain the top spot in the Centennial Conference standings as it travels to Franklin & Marshall for a Saturday afternoon match-up.  Action is slated for 1 p.m.
