Teleky, Jones Lead Field Hockey Past Muhlenberg 3-0

BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Sophomore forward Katie Teleky scored two goals in the first half  while Nia Jones added a late insurance goal as the Swarthmore College field hockey team (6-7, 3-2) rolled over  Muhlenberg (1-10, 1-4) by a 3-0 score on Wednesday afternoon from Clothier Field Stadium.

For the Garnet, who have won three of four games, the sixth win of the season is the most by any field hockey squad since head coach Lauren Fuchs took over in 2008. The Garnet’s 3-2 Centennial Conference record marks the first time the team has been above .500 in conference play five or more conference games into the season since 2006, and also equals the most conference victories by any Swarthmore squad since 2007.

Teleky scored tow first half goals for the Garnet.

Although the score remained deadlocked at 0-0 for the first 24 minutes of play, it was clear that the Garnet sticks were dominating the day, as Swarthmore took seven shots before Teleky took her own rebound in front of the net and scored her first goal of the day in the 24th minute.  She made it twice as nice in a matter of a minute and a half, scoring for the second time in the 26th minute, this time assisted by freshman Aarti Rao and sophomore Allison Ranshous.

The two first-half goals put Teleky in the team lead in goals scored, with eight.  However, freshman forward Jones, whose seven goals led the team coming into the day, would not relinquish her position without a fight, netting her eighth of the season in the 62nd minute and capping the scoring at 3-0. The goal marks the fourth consecutive game in which Jones has scored for the Garnet.

Four of Swarthmore’s top five field hockey scorers this season are either freshmen or sophomores, providing much reason for optimism about the future of Garnet field hockey.

Swarthmore dominated every aspect of play, out-shooting the Mules by a 23-5 margin.  Senior goalkeeper Katie Ashmore was relentless in goal this afternoon, notching 70 scoreless minutes.

The Garnet will continue its push towards a Centennial Conference playoff berth  when it faces McDaniel in a home conference match on Saturday.  Play is set to begin at noon.
