Swat Volleyball Dominant in Day One of Garnet Classic

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Sophomore Kathryn Montemurro dominated up front with 19 kills and five service aces while freshman Danielle Sullivan recorded 25 digs in two games to lead the Swarthmore Volleyball team (6-1) over Albright College (1-5) and Marymount University (1-5).  The Garnet make quick work of its opponents on Friday night, winning each match 3-0 to stay perfect on day one of the Garnet Classic in Tarble Pavilion.

With the victories, Swarthmore is off to its best start since 1975 when the Garnet went 8-0 to start the season.

Game 1

Sophomore Kathryn Montemurro had 19 kills and five aces on day one of the Garnet Classic.

Swat downed the Albright Lions 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-17) in game one of the Garnet Classic.

All but two players added a kill two their stats in game one against Albright College with a total of 41 kills in the match.  Montemurro led the way for the Garnet offense with 10 kills while sophomore Genny Pezzola and freshman Danielle Sullivan would knock down nine kills apiece.

Sophomore Allison Coleman set up the Swat offensive with 19 assists.  Senior Sarah Lambert would also serve up 12 assists in the match.

Once again the stellar Garnet defense was a clear factor in the dominant victory with four players posting double-digit digs.  Junior Hillary Santana made her presence known all over the court to lead with 16 digs.  Junior Libero, Lisa Shang was once again virtually impenetrable with 12 digs.

Montemurro would pick up 11 digs and Sullivan 10 in the match.

The Swat defense held the Lions to only 17 kills in the match and would have three blocks.

The Albright defense also put together an impressive game at the net with three solo blocks and four block assists while also picking up 51 digs in the match.

Danielle Ozment led the Lion offense with seven kills.

Game 2

Swarthmore kept the ball rolling in its second game of the Classic with a convincing 3-0 (25-7, 25-16, 25-23) win over the Marymount Saints.

Montemurro was the keystone for the Garnet offense in game one and it didn't change in game two where she would put away nine more kills.  Freshman Brone Lobichusky backed Montemurro up with eight kills.

Pezzola and Sullivan each added seven kills in the match.

Coleman improved in the win posting an amazing 26 assists against the Saints to set up the Garnet attack.  Lambert would record another six assists and three service aces.

The third set of the match saw the Marymount front attacking hard to give them an early lead and keep it close throughout the set but the Garnet defense prevailed.  This time it was Pezzola who would lead Swat with 18 digs while Sullivan would come up with 15.

Shang proved her leadership in the back once again, adding 10 more digs to her resume.

Marymount's Sharda Braxton, Michelle McCormick and Johanna Hummel each recorded seven kills in the game while Chelsea Gates would lead the Saints with 11 digs.

Swarthmore hits the court on day two of the Garnet Classic at 10:00 am on Saturday September 11 in Tarble Pavilion.  The Garnet will face off against Wesley College.
