Field Hockey Loses Heartbreaker to Washington 2-1

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Washington College sophomore Gussie Reilly scored the game-winning goal in the 66th minute as the visiting Shorewomen rallied to beat the Garnet 2-1 at Clothier Field on Tuesday night.

The visiting Shorewomen opened up the game with a bang, surprising the Garnet with an early goal.  Washington senior Kelsey Kemp scored on  ar icocheted  shot off of the post that went into goal in the third minute off the game, giving the Shorewomen a 1-0 lead.

After the rough start,  the Garnet turned the tide and quickly and put the pressure on the Washington keeper, placing five of its next six shots on the goal for the rest of the first half.  Then in the 49th minute, Swarthmore’s seventh shot made some noise at it hit the back of the goal.  Senior Joslyn Young waited at the corner of the net for the perfectly placed pass from fellow senior Hoa Pham before she pounded it past the keeper for the tying goal, making the score 1-1.

The Garnet would hold the Shorewomen shot-less in the second half until the 66th minute.  Washington’s first shot of the half came when sophomore Gussie Reilly took one from the corner of the circle and past the goalie for the game-winning goal.

In goal for the Garnet, senior captain Gina Grubb made four saves.

Swarthmore will visit McDaniel College on Saturday October 3rd for another conference showdown.  Action begins at 5:00 PM.
