Volleyball Sweeps First Day of Competition at Greyhound Premier

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Swarthmore volleyball dominated the competition in day one of the Greyhound Premier, as the Garnet posted its first victory of the season by topping Cabrini College Cavaliers 3-1, followed by a shutout victory over the Wesley College Wolverines on Friday evening.

Swarthmore came ready to play Friday afternoon when they faced Cabrini College in its first match. The Garnet controlled the first two games, winning both 25-15 and taking game four 25-6 to seal the deal. Swarthmore defense carried the team to victory with sophomores Lisa Shang and Genny Pezzola combining for 35 digs.

On the attack, senior Johanna Bond and sophomore Genny Pezzola led the team with 11 kills each while senior Kearny Bangs put up 31 assists for the match. Allie Coleman continued her freshman campaign with impressive play and led the Garnet attack with eight aces.

The Garnet kept the ball rolling with another impressive win in the second game, shutting out the Wesley College Wolverines 3-0. Freshmen Ally Coleman and Kathryn Montemurro led the offense combining for 18 kills. Coleman added six more aces to bring her tournament tally to 14 thus far. Senior Kearny Bangs kept the offense on track with 26 assists.

The Swarthmore defense rained supreme once again holding off the Wolverines in all three games 25-6, 25-13 and 25-15. Sophomores Genny Pezzola and Lisa Shang led the defensive front with a combined 17 digs.

The championship round begins tomorrow for the Garnet at noon.
