Garnet Suffer Tough Loss to Moravian in Season Debut

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Making its 2009 debut, the Swarthmore College volleyball team took the first set 25-16 against Moravian, but the Greyhounds rallied to take the next three, as the Garnet fell 3-1 in its season debut.

The Garnet got off to a great start, winning the first game 25-16 behind the great play from Kearny Bangs ’10 and Genny Pezzola ’12. The Garnet continued good play into game two but lost 25-23 after climbing back from a 24-17 deficit.

Game three saw several lead changes, but Moravian took it 26-24.  After taking games two and three, Moravian kept the momentum going winning a back and forth game four 25-23.  Led by OH Katie Moquete, the Greyhounds won the match 3-1.

Although the outcome didn’t end in the Garnet’s favor, leadership was shown when needed.  Kearny Bangs ‘10 and Genny Pezzola ‘12 made their voices heard throughout the game to keep the team on their feet and their heads up.  Freshman starters Kathryn Montemurro and Allison Coleman also made a big impact for Swarthmore in their debut game.  The Garnet will be looking for revenge this weekend (Sept. 4-5) as they travel to Moravian for the Greyhound Premier.
