Garnet Hunt Down Owls

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Visiting Bryn Mawr fell behind early and was never able to catch-up, falling at Swarthmore 18-4 in Centennial Conference women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon on Clothier Field.

Swarthmore (7-3, 1-3 CC) was led by sophomore midfielders Emily Evans (Atlanta, Ga. / North Springs) and Amy Vachal (Somerset, N.J. / Rutgers Prep) with four goals each while seven other Garnet players recorded goals on the afternoon. Vachal (below) pushed her scoring streak to 16 as Evans extended hers to 12 wlax_vachala_fp2_09games in a row while notching her 50th career goal.

Sogliuzzo paced the Owls (2-8, 0-5 CC) with two goals while Kellom and Lawrence netted the others. Lawrence had a game-best seven draw controls as Natalie Chrismer won two. Chrismer, Emily Levine, and Sogliuzzo scooped up three ground balls apiece.

Despite winning 16 of the 24 draw controls, Bryn Mawr 13-for-28 on clear attempts. Swarthmore held a 30-18 advantage on ground balls.

Swarthmore jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as they got goals from freshman midfielder Marie Mutryn (Rexford, N.Y. / Niskayuna) and senior defender Kelsey Hatzell (Havertown, Pa. / Havertown). Katie Kellom got the Owls on the board at the 18:52 mark with her fifth goal of the season.

Thirty-three seconds later, Vachal took a feed from Evans to notch her 34th goal on the year. Back-to-back goals by Evans (below, right) and one from senior Marissa Schaffer (Moreland Hill, Ohio / Laurel School) pushed Swarthmore’s lead to 6-1 with 11:46 to play in the half. The Owls answered with goals from Georgiawlax_eevans_closeup2_09 Lawrence and Cara Sogliuzzo to cut the Garnet’s lead to three. Kellom was assisted on both Bryn Mawr goals.

Swarthmore closed out the half scoring four unanswered goals. They held a 10-3 advantage at the half.

The second half started out great for the Owls when Sogliuzzo netted her second goal of the game at 26:57, unfortunately, that would be the last time Bryn Mawr would score in the contest. The Garnet used eight straight goals over the final twenty-four minutes of the game.

Junior goalkeeper Allison Grein (Floral Park, N.Y. / Floral Park) posted 12 saves for Swarthmore.

Swarthmore will return to Clothier Field on Tuesday, April 7th when they host Ursinus College. The Centennial Conference contest is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
