Garnet Tennis Douses Green Terror

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The  Swarthmore men's tennis team hit the Mullan Tennis Center courts on Saturday morning, sweeping the McDaniel Green Terror 9-0 in Centennial Conference action.

McDaniel (2-2, 0-1 CC), with only five players on the courts today, was forced to default the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matces, handing the Garnet men (3-4, 1-0 CC) two of the nine wins.

At No. 1 doubles, freshman Stephen Youngblood (Norcross, Ga. / Home school) and sophomore Mark Wee (Syosset, N.Y. / Syosset) soundly defeated McDaniel’s Dan Hovorka and Ben Faber, 8-5. Freshman duo Max Bressman (Chappaqua, N.Y. / Horace Greeley) and Eric Legunn (Waccabuc, N.Y. / John Jay) commanded their more experienced opponents, senior Adrian Pettaway and sophomore Justin Ward, in an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles.

In singles play, the Garnet freshmen made another impressive showing, with Youngblood swiftly defeating Green Terror Havorka 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Bressman, at No. 2 singles, took on Ward for a second time, chalking up a 6-0, 6-0 shutout for the Garnet men. Facing McDaniel’s Pettaway, Legunn triumphed again in an 8-1 match at No. 4 singles and, in his first match of the season, freshman Taylor Chen (Houston, TX / Lamar) sealed the Garnet sweep with another 8-1 victory at No. 5 singles.

On Saturday afternoon, the Garnet men travel to Virginia, where they will take on 18th-ranked Washington & Lee Sunday morning.
