Garnet Cast Paul Over Windy Course

SPRINGFIELD, Pa. -- Swarthmore freshman Paul Weston led the Garnet golf team to its second straight win, carding a four-over par 75 at Rolling Green Golf Club on a windy Monday afternoon.

Swarthmore posted a team score of 320 to best four other squads at the second home match of the spring season.  Eastern University (344) was second in the team standings, followed by Philadelphia University of the Sciences (354), Richard Stockton (369) and Arcadia (384).

golf_westonp_swing1_09Weston (Waterbury, Vt. / Harwood Union) had little problem with the chilly conditions at the par-71 course, having played his high school matches in the icy spring time of New England.  Weston (left) used his long drives to cut through the wind and seemed to solve the putting issues from the spring break trip to post his best collegiate score.

Garnet captain Michael Bernasek ’09 (Fairfield, Conn. / Hopkins School) tied for second on the leader board with a 77. Arcadia’s Kevin Gallagher also posted a 77, tying for second to lead the Knights.  USP’s Scott Cahayla led his squad with an 80 while Drew Krupp of Eastern submitted the low score for the Eagles.

Swarthmore junior Kelly Schoolmeester (Irmo, S.C. / Irmo) continued his steady improvement, posting a collegiate-best score of 84, tying for third on the Garnet Saturday with freshman Alex Nichamin (Brookville, Pa. / Brookville).

The Garnet will get a preview of the lay-out for the 2009 Centennial Conference Championships this weekend, traveling to the Bridges Golf Course for the McDaniel Invitational.  Swarthmore will take part in the two-day event on March 28-29 with their tee-time scheduled for 12:20 p.m.
