Garnet Dont Shy From Gold

LANCASTER, Pa. -- The Swarthmore swim teams got off to a jumping start at the 2009 Centennial Conference Swim Championships, breaking two school records in the Kunkel Aquatic Center Friday night.

Senior Stephen Shymon (Encinitas, Calif. / Univ. of San Diego) picked up the first Centennial Conference gold medal for Swarthmore in the men’s 500-yard freestyle with a finish-time of 4:41.03. He broke his previous school record of 4:42.80 that was set in 2006.

The second school record that fell this evening was in the men’s 50-yard freestyle, senior Doug Gilchrist-Scott (Canton, Ohio / Hoover) broke his record that he set at last year’s Conference Championships. The freestyle sprinter marked a 21.39 race-time which earned his a bronze medal.

The men’s 400-yard medley relay picked-up a silver medal with sophomore Santiago Lombo (Houston, Texas / Strake Jesuit) leading the way with a slit time of 53.77, classmate Sterling Satterfield (Durham, N.C. / Charles E. Jordan) finished his leg with in 58.68, freshman Sam Bullard-Sisken (Silver Spring, Md. / Montgomery Blair) was the third to jump in for the Garnet with a slit time of 53.49 and to finish off the race strong Gilchrist-Scott had a freestyle swim of 46.08. The medley team finished with a final race-time of 3:32.02, just ahead of long-time rival Gettysburg who clocked in at 3:33.23.

Gilchrist-Scott paced the Garnet men’s 200-yard freestyle team to a bronze medal for his second relay medal of the evening. Swimming in the middle legs were freshman Tim Brevart (Swarthmore, Pa. / Strath Haven) and Lance Liu (Paoli, Pa. / Conestoga), junior Michael Ahn (Cupertino, Calif. / Monta Vista) held down the anchor position as the team finished with a time of 1:26.08.

Satterfield earned his first individual medal of the meet in the men’s 200 individual medley with a time of 1:58.52, which was good for a bronze medal.
