#21 Mules Power Past Garnet

ALLENTOWN, Pa.  -- Garnet forward Kathryn Stockbower '11 tallied a game-high 24 points in a 78-55 loss at 21st-ranked Muhlenberg Tuesday evening in Centennial Conference women's basketball.

Swarthmore dipped to 11-11, and 8-7 in the Conference.   The Garnet still trail the main pack in the Centennial playoff race, sitting just a game out of fourth place with three regular season games remaining.   Muhlenberg (19-3 overall, 15-0 CC) has already clinched the right to host the Conference Championships on Feb. 28-March 1 and honored its senior class with a pre-game ceremony at Memorial Hall tonight.

Stockbower (Ft. Washington, Pa. / Upper Dublin) also loves to play in Allentown, upping her average on the floor to 20.5 points per game.  Tuesday night she extended her school record of scoring in double figures to 44 games in a row (Johns Hopkins Julie Arnold holds the Centennial record of 46 consecutive).  Stockbower, the leading scorer in the Conference (17.9 per game entering the night), hit the 20-plus points high-water mark for the seventh time in 2008-09 and also added eight rebounds.

Swarthmore forward Summer Miller-Walfish (San Jose, N.M. / West Las Vegas) dropped in eight points and five boards while freshman guard Brittany Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J. / Rumson-Fair Haven) came of the bench to register six points (a career-high).

The Mules had four players score in double-digits, led by sophomore guard Kelly McKeon who registered a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Alexandra Chili hit four three-pointers en route to 16 points.

Muhlenberg started their special night with a 6-0 run in the first three minutes of the game. Swarthmore was quick to get back in the game as they cut the deficit to only one point (11-10) with 14:27 showing on the clock

Miller-Wallfish was the fuel behind the Garnet 8-3 run scoring six points as the score tallied 12-11 with 13:55 remaining, Swarthmore’s only lead of the half.

The Mules offense took off with the clock showing 9:51 going up ten by a score of 24-14. They continued to show strength on both sides of the court during the first half, holding a consistent lead of over ten points for the remainder of the half.

The half ended with the Mules leading, 44-31, Erin McSherry powered the Mules with 10 points and teammate McKeon had eight points and dished out four assists. Stockbower registered 12 points to lead Swarthmore in the scoring category.

The Garnet will return to Tarble Pavilion this Saturday, February 14th as they host Gettysburg College. The annual Alumnae Game will take place in Tarble at 10:00 a.m.  The varsity women will take on the Bullets later in the afternoon, tipping at 2:00 p.m.
