Garnet Fall to Red Devils

CARLISLE, Pa. -- The Dickinson women's basketball team saw three starters score in double digits en route to a 69-51 Centennial Conference win over Swarthmore at the Cline Center Saturday afternoon.

On a day that began with five teams tied for second place in the Centennial, Dickinson improved to 12-9 overall and 9-5 Conference record, while Swarthmore fell to 11-10 overall and 8-6 in the Centennial.

Swarthmore was led by sophomore forward Kathryn Stockbower (Ft. Washington, Pa. / Upper Dublin) who registered her third double-double in a row with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore Summer Miller-Walfish (San Jose N.M. / West Las Vegas) tallied her 46th block of the season to break her own school record (set last season) for most blocks in a single season.

Red Devils' junior guard Brook Muller scored 16 points in the second half on her way to a total 22 game-high points. Both Carole Dempsey and Alesha Sisco gathered six rebounds while adding 15 and 11 points, respectively.

The first five minutes of play saw basket-for-basket action but with 13:56 the Red Devils took the lead with 12-9 showing on the board and never gave an inch back to the Garnet.

Dickinson’s tight man-coverage on defense prevented Swarthmore’s normal inside offense from succeeding.

At 7:47, Dickinson had a 21-12 advantage and continued to play tough defense, forcing two Garnet turnovers in a row, pushing their lead nine points.

With just under two minutes left, Swarthmore cut the deficit to six points but the Red Devils countered with a three-point play where Sisco hit a layup and then drained the bonus point.

The second half started with Dickinson holding a 31-24 lead but Swarthmore came out of the locker room to score the first two baskets.

Muller scored Dickinson’s first seven points of the half tallying two field goals and a three-pointer.

The Garnet fought hard to break Dickinson’s full-court press in the second half.  They forced the ball inside and took advantage of a close-range offense powered by Stockbower.

The Garnet conclude their recent three-game road trip at Muhlenberg on Tuesday night. Tip-off in Allentown, Pa. is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
