SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Garnet swim teams opened up the second semester with a splash, sweeping both sides of a non-conference dual meet Saturday afternoon in Ware Pool.  The Swarthmore men topped Cabrini, 106-68 while the Garnet women posted a 157-93 victory over the Cavaliers.

The Garnet men (3-3 overall) posted the top time in nearly every race, with both Stephen Shymon ’09 (Encinitas, Calif. / University of San Diego HS) and Sterling Satterfield ’11 (Durham, N.C. / Charles E. Jordan) recording top times in two individual events.

All-American butterflier Anne Miller ’10 (Buffalo, N.Y. / Buffalo Seminary) returned from an early-season injury, winning the 200-yard event in 2:14.34.  The talented Garnet butterfliers also won the 100-yard race with Glassman (1:01.65) and Osborn (1:02.74) finishing 1-2.  Glassman later claimed a victory in the 100 freestyle (57.92), and was followed home by Claire Shelden ’10 (Lewiston, Mont. / Fergus) in 58.17.

An exciting intra-squad race developed in the women’s 200 back as three Swarthmore women finished within one-half second of each other:  Jessica Pritchett ‘09 (Burke, Va. / Lake Braddock) was first (2:25.08), just beating Laura Rainey ’09 (Arlington, Va. / Yorktown) (2:25.21) and Jacqueline Scala ’12 (Pequannock, N.J. / Newark Academy) (2:25.50).

The men enjoyed an easy transition after the winter break. Derrick Kao ’11 (Santa Monica, Calif. / Havard-Westlake) led a Swarthmore sweep in the 1000 free style (10:44.72) and Shymon followed by winning 200 free (1:51.60) by half a second over Cabrini’s Kyle Teliszewski.  Shymon would later break the 5-minute mark in the 500 freestyle, swimming a time of 4:59.34 in exhibition.

Santiago Lombo ’11 (Houston, Texas / Strake Jesuit) led a 1-2 Garnet finish in the 100 back (56.01), followed closely by Doug Gilchrist-Scott ’09 (Canton, Ohio / Hoover) with a time of 56.81.   Gilchrist-Scott flipped over later in the afternoon, winning the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 22.33, clinching the team victory for Swarthmore.

Satterfield earned his first victory in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.50), leading Lance Liu ’12 (Paoli, Pa. / Conestoga) home in second (1:03.14).  Satterfield later swam a 2:16.58 in the 200 breaststroke, posting the race’s fastest time in exhibition.

Freshman Dante Fuoco ’12 (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Mt. Lebanon) wins the 200 fly, uncontested by Cabrini, in a time of 2:14.75.
