Swarthmore Bows Out of CC Playoffs

BALTIMORE - Garnet sophomore Kelsey Cline notched her third goal of the season as the Swarthmore women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to Dickinson Saturday afternoon in semifinal action at the Centennial Conference Championships at Johns Hopkins University.

Swarthmore (9-4-4 overall) was competing in its third consecutive Centennial Conference playoffs, earning the No. 3 seed.  The Red Devils improve to 12-3-3 on the season and advances to face top-seeded Johns Hopkins in the championship on November 9.

The Garnet women controlled the action throughout the first half, going ahead on the scoreboard with Cline’s goal in the 17th minute.  Swarthmore sophomore midfielder Sarah Reece (Manhattan Beach, Calif. / Mira Costa) played a ball to the top of the Dickinson penalty box.  Cline (Stanwood, Wash. / Stanwood) beat a Dickinson defender and headed the ball over the charging Red Devil goalkeeper for her 11th career goal.

The Red Devils posted the equalizer just before half when Molly Schaefer posted her second goal at 41:26.  Dickinson teammates Courtney Anderson and Ashley Kunkle assisted on the play.  The 1-1 score held up into the intermission.

Dickinson scored the eventual game-winner in the 67th minute, coming off the foot Genevieve Olson.  An assist was credited to Sarah Montminy.

Swarthmore posted a slight 13-10 advantage in the shot category while the Red Devils attempted four corners to just one for the Garnet.

Garnet senior goalkeeper Lauren Walker (Fallston, Md. / The Hotchkiss School [CT]) posted two saves while Dickinson netminder Kailyn Harmann registered four stops.

Swarthmore will now await word on a possible post-season bid; the Garnet women appeared in the 2007 ECAC South Region Championship and came home the championship trophy.
