Bangs, Wang Pass Milestones at Sea Gull Classic

SALISBURY, Md. -- Garnet junior setter Kearney Bangs passed the 2,000-assist milestone and senior outside hitter Jen Wang topped 1,000-career kills as Swarthmore picked up third place at the Sea Gull Invitational this past weekend on the campus of Salisbury University.

Swarthmore topped Virginia Wesleyan, 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-16) in their final match Saturday afternoon, paced by 11 kills and 14 digs from Wang (Palo Alto, Calif. / Henry Gunn).  Wang surpassed 1,000 kills earlier in the weekend, totaling 1,024 for her career (just 128 shy of breaking the school record held by Erica George '07).

The Garnet began the two-day invitational with losses to Richard Stockton (3-0; 25-19, 25-21, 25-14) and Salisbury (3-0; 25-14, 25-12, 25-21).  Freshman Genny Pezzola (Oakland, Calif. / St. Mary’s College HS) posted 21 kills and 24 digs in the two matches while Bangs (Kingston, Wash. / North Kitsap) registered 44 assists.

Bangs (left) became the 25th Centennial player to join the 2,000-assist club, compiling 91 assists over the four days.  She now has 2,072 helpers for her career, ranking second in school history to Emily Conlon ’05 (3,199).

The Garnet (4-11) had Virginia Wesleyan scheduled for Saturday morning in round-robin action and, based on Saturday’s action, found another match with VWC again in the consolation.  VWC won the first match, 3-1 (25-14, 20-25, 25-13, 25-17), despite 17 kills and digs by Wang.  Swarthmore got a bit of revenge in the afternoon, cruising to victory behind double-doubles from Wang (11 kills, 14 digs) and Pezzola (10 kills, team-high 17 digs).  Senior libero Erin Heaney (Buffalo, N.Y. / City Honors) collected 12 digs and freshman middle Hillary Santana (South Lake Tahoe, Calif. / South Tahoe) added six kills and two service aces.

Swarthmore returns to Tarble Pavilion this coming Wednesday, Sept. 24, opening Centennial Conference play with the Bryn Mawr Owls at 7:00 p.m.
