Garnet Fall in Championship Match

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Second-seed Swarthmore (12-6) fell to top seed #21 Johns Hopkins (15-3) in the 2008 Women's Tennis Centennial Conference Championships with a final score of 5-3 on Sunday afternoon at the Cross Keys Athletic Club.

For the second year in a row the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays defeated the Garnet in the Championship for their second Conference title.

Erica Lukoski ’08 (Shoreham, N.Y. / Shoreham-Wading River) and Luann Cignavitch ‘11 (Charleston, S.C. / Porter-Gaud School) won 8-6 in number two doubles for the Garnet defeating Johns Hopkins pair Amanda Schubert and Abby Dwyer.

Johns Hopkins closed doubles with a 2-1 lead after wins at the number one and three spots.

Garnet number two singles player Jennie Park ’09 (Rockford, Ill. / Guilford) finished with winning scores of 7-5 and 6-4 to make the overall score 3-2 while defeating regionally ranked #15 Brittany Matava.

Swarthmore’s number one singles player Rachel Wallwork ’10 (Washington, D.C. / Georgetown Day) came back to win 6-7 (0-7), 7-5 and 10-1 over Anita Bhamidipati. Wallwork improved to 15-1 at the number one spot.

Johns Hopkins clinched the match following a 6-4 and 6-0 win for Schubert, who defeated Cignavitch at the number five slot.
