Shoop Tops Steeplechase

EWING, N.J. -- Swarthmore senior Jon Shoop won the 3,000 meter steeplechase when the Garnet track & field team competed in the Lions Invite on Saturday afternoon on the campus of the College of New Jersey.

Shoop (Reno, Nev. / Incline) won the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:54.37.

Junior Connor Darby (Nashville, Tenn. / MLK Academic Magnet) placed sixth overall in the 800 meter run crossing the line with a season best 1:57.73 race-time. While Andrew VanBuren ’10 (Hudson, Ohio / Western Reserve Academy) also had a season’s best time of 2:05.46.

In the 1,500 meter run Micah Katz ’08 (Stevens Point, Wis. / Stevens Point Area) posted a 4:20.94 season-best.

Nathalie Degaiffier ’10 (Washington, D.C. / Washington International) crossed the line with 31.72 on the clock for a season-best in the 200 meter dash.

In the 800 meter run Melina Healey ’08 (New York City, N.Y. / Fieldston) qualified for the Conference Championships with a 2:34.45 race-time.

Junior Bess Ritter (Quaker Hill, Conn. / Wasterford) placed 11th overall in the women’s 1,500 with a season-best 5:04.05 race-time while Emma Stanley (Fogelsville, Pa. / Parkland) also posted a season-best 5:18.03.

The Garnet will prepare during the week for the 2008 Centennial Conference Championships on May 2-4. The meet is being held at the Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium on the campus of Gettysburg College.
