Fords Close Series With Win

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Haverford Fords (22-9-1, 10-4 CC) scored five runs in the seventh on their way to a 13-3 win over the Swarthmore Garnet (8-17, 2-13 CC) in Centennial Conference baseball action on a sunny Friday afternoon at the Clothier Fields.

Prior to the first pitch, four Swarthmore student-athletes were honored during the annual Senior Day. The senior captains (pictured left to right) Ben Mendelson (Sabbatus, Maine / Lewiston), Scott Dalane (Vernon, N.J. / Vernon Township), Justin Chen (Media, Pa. / Penncrest) and Travis Allen (Suffield, Conn. / Loomis Chaffee) were given jerseys in appreciation for their four years of dedication and commitment to the Garnet Baseball Team.

Right fielder Ben Schneiderman ’11 (Easton, Pa. / Easton) led the Garnet from the plate hitting 2-for-3 and had one RBI.

In the bottom of the second sophomore short stop Thomas Nakamura (San Francisco, Calif. / Lowell) hit a deep double into right field to have Mendelson cross the plate making the score 2-1 in favor of the Fords.

Swarthmore scored two runs in the third to tie the score at 3-3. Second baseman Kevin Kooi ’09 (Lafayette, Calif. / College Preparatory School) reached first off an error to get the inning started. He was advanced to second off of a bunt by Dalane. Schneiderman hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield sending Kooi across the plate for a run. Dalane stole his eighth base of the season to advance to second. Sophomore infielder Jimmy Gill (Lewes, Del. / Cape Henlopen) picked up his 12th RBI of the season driving in Dalane.

The Fords batted around in the seventh inning and scored five runs which pushed the score to 10-3. They picked up three more runs to close the game with a final score of 13-3

Chen (0-2) started on the mound for the Garnet, pitching six innings and had eight strike outs while picking up the loss.

The Garnet will continue their Conference schedule traveling to Gettysburg on Saturday, April 19 for a double-header starting 12:30 p.m.
