Garnet Golf Opens Season with Win

PINEHURST, N.C. -- Swarthmore junior Michael Bernasek shot a 38 on the front and sophomore Jeffrey Lazarus followed with a 39 on the back side as the Garnet picked up its first victory of the season, defeating the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg Wednesday afternoon on the No. 4 course at the Pinehurst Resort, site of the 2008 U.S. Amateur.

The Garnet (1-0) out-scored the Lions 357 to 380 in the overall team score to pick up the first dual-match victory of 2008.

Michael Bernasek ‘09Bernasek (left) carded a nine-over 81 at the No. 4 course (par 72), registering three birdies and six pars along the way. His highlight of the day came when he birdied the 398-yard par-4 third hole after hitting his drive over 300 yards.

Lazarus fought the Pinehurst-style domed greens early in his round before a birdie at the par-5 ninth hole provided some momentum. The sophomore played the next nine holes three-over, including a key birdie at the 400-yard par-4 18th hole.

The Garnet return home this weekend and will open the home slate at Rolling Green Golf Club on Monday, March 17 against Neumann. Tee time is set for 1:00 p.m.
